US asks Greece to close airspace for Russian flights to Syria
DEBKAfile September 7, 2015, 6:43 PM (IDT)

The United States has asked Greece to deny Russia the use of its airspace for supply flights to Syria, a Greek official said on Monday, after Washington told Moscow it was deeply concerned by reports of a Russian military build up in Syria. The Greek foreign ministry said the request was being examined. Russian newswire RIA Novosti earlier said Greece had refused the US request, quoting a diplomatic source as saying that Russia was seeking permission to run the flights up to Sept. 24. DEBKAfile adds: The US administration aims to block the Russian military airlift into Syria, which we first reported on Sept. 1, was landing at Damascus airport’s Mezze Airbase. Moscow has addressed over-flight requests to Turkey and Cyprus as well as Greece, indicating the large scale of its military airlift to Syria."
