BBC: Iran is establishing military base in Syria 50km from Israeli Golan
BBC satellite images show construction activity at a site 14km south of Damascus where a dozen large low-rise buildings, apparently for housing soldiers and vehicles, were built in recent months. It is not clear whether the buildings are currently occupied. Analysts estimate that up to 500 troops could be accommodated at the site, which lies about 50km from the Israeli Golan. Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu has said more than once: “Iran wants to establish itself militarily in Syria, right next to Israel. Israel will not let that happen.”
