At the Friends of Syria conference in Paris, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton underlined the rift between Washington, on the one hand, and Moscow and Beijing on the other, by accusing them both of keeping Bashar Assad in power in the face of the increasing stream of high-level defections from the Syrian army. Using language unprecedented since the Cold War, Clinton called on the 80 nations represented in Paris to “make it clear that Russia and China will pay a price” for supporting Assad."
